Description

The Garrick Inn is a public house located on High Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, dating back to around 1596. The facade was heavily restored around 1912, replacing an earlier brick front from around 1800. The building features a timber-frame structure with plaster infill and a tiled roof, complemented by rear brick stacks. It stands three storeys high with a symmetrical two-window range. The first and second floors are jettied on brackets, with a moulded bressumer supporting the second floor. The attic has two 20th-century gables adorned with enriched barge-boards.

The entrance, positioned at the left end, includes a stained-glass overlight above a plank door. The ground and first floors showcase three-light wooden mullioned and transomed windows, with the ground floor windows featuring a continuous row of small square lights above. The attic is fitted with two-light windows, all featuring leaded glazing. The upper floors display square framing with concave-sided diamonds. An early 20th-century bracketed timber sign board is also present. A rear wing includes a cross-axial stack.

Inside, the inn retains exposed timber-framing and beams. Historically, it is noted as the place where the plague of 1564 is said to have started and has been an inn since 1718. The name changed from the Greyhound to the Garrick in 1795 in honor of David Garrick, who significantly contributed to the town's tourist trade by promoting interest in Shakespeare.
