Description

19 and 20 High Street is a town house that has been converted into a restaurant and shop. It dates from around 1610, with restoration work carried out in the 1920s. The building features a timber-frame structure with plaster infill and a tiled roof, which has a brick stack at the rear. Originally, it was one house along with No. 21 and had two gables.

The building stands three storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical two-window arrangement. The second floor jetties out on consoles, showcasing exposed soffit timbers. The early 20th-century shop fronts are adorned with enriched consoles on the fascias and canopies. The first floor includes wooden-mullioned and transomed oriel windows from the 20th century, flanked by original small two-light windows. The second floor features four-light projecting windows and a four-light hipped dormer window, all fitted with leaded glazing. The framing is close-studded with mid rails, and there is a timber bracketed sign board from the 1920s.

At the rear, there is a gabled wing with a rainwater head and a cross-axial stack that has separate diagonal shafts, along with a single-storey and attic wing. Inside, the property boasts broadly chamfered beams and exposed timber-framing, with close-studded framing visible on the left return. The open-well staircase has a cut string and enriched tread ends, with balusters shaped like columns on vases. There is dado panelling, and the rear room features a corner cupboard with fluted pilasters, a six-fielded-panel door, a simplified shell vault, and shaped shelves. The first floor contains some 17th-century panelling and a stone chimney breast with a bressumer.
