Description

21 High Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop and dwelling. It dates from around 1600, with restoration work carried out in the 1920s. The building features a timber frame with plaster infill set on a rubble plinth, topped with a tile roof that has a rear brick stack with four clustered diagonal shafts. It stands three storeys high, plus an attic, and has a symmetrical facade with four windows. The first and second floors project out over the ground floor on consoles and joist ends, and there are two gables.

The early 20th-century shop front has small-paned upper glazing and windows flanking a recessed entrance; to the left, there is a studded wide-board door. The first and second floors have windows with sills and 12-pane sash windows, likely from the mid-18th century. The attic features small three-light ovolo-mullioned windows. The building has close-studded framing with mid rails, and the right side shows exposed framing. At the rear, there is a gabled wing with a cross-axial stack that has clustered diamond shafts, along with a single-storey wing.

Inside, the building has broadly chamfered beams and is noted for having early 17th-century doors and panelling. Originally, it was part of a larger house that included Nos 18 and 19.
