Description

Tudor House is a town house that has been converted into a shop, built between 1595 and 1596 and restored in 1903. It features a timber-frame structure with plaster infill and a hipped tile roof with brick end stacks. The building stands three storeys high and has a three-window range. The first and second storeys are jettied on consoles. The early 20th-century shop fronts include segmental-headed plate glass windows and recessed entrances.

On the first floor, there are 20th-century wooden-mullioned and transomed windows, two of which have four lights, and one is cross-mullioned. The second floor has two-light windows, all featuring leaded glazing. The corner-post is carved with a human mask and includes two enriched consoles. The first floor displays close studding below herring-bone framing, and the corner console at the angle has two crouched figures. The attic shows traces of three gables that have been levelled and infilled to create straight eaves, with ogival braces.

The left return of the building is similar to the front, and the rear wing has a cross-axial stack with four clustered diagonal shafts. Inside, there is a plaque that records the restoration funded by the novelist Marie Corelli.
