Description
The James I Restaurant is a house and the remains of a cottage, now functioning as a restaurant. It dates from the late 16th century and 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is timber framed and covered in whitewashed render, topped with a plain tiled roof, which has been partly re-roofed in the 20th century.
The structure has two storeys and attics, featuring a gabled 19th-century casement dormer located to the left of the center. A main stack is positioned to the rear left of the center. On the first floor, there are two 19th-century casement windows, one with three lights and the other with two lights. To the left, there is a first-floor door above a flat-lintelled throughway below.
On the ground floor, there is an oriel bay window to the left of center and a smaller window to the right. A half-glazed and panelled door is located at the right end, framed by a pilaster-pier surround. In the center, there is a glazed door also framed with a pilaster surround and topped with a flat hood. The throughway to the left has its frame exposed on the north and south sides, with the north side showing a more substantial scantling, while the south side suggests the remains of a cottage with a thinner frame at the rear.
Inside, the substantial frame is exposed, and some 19th-century panelling can be seen behind the bar.
