Description
No. 20 Chapel Street is a cottage that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with 19th-century extensions added to the rear. The building is timber framed and covered in colourwashed render, topped with a plain tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with attics, featuring a gabled 19th-century dormer that includes a sash window in a moulded surround. There is a stack on the front left side. The first floor jetties out and has a three-light leaded casement window beneath the eaves, while the ground floor to the left has a plate glass window. The door is located at the right end, positioned beneath an over-light.
On the left-hand return front, the wall is exposed in the alley, displaying a square-patterned frame on a rendered plinth. There is a truncated stack at the rear and three attic windows in the rear gable. Additionally, there are single-storey brick and flint extensions that are set at right angles to the main building. An original alleyway between this property and No. 21 remains intact, featuring a massive post and mortice for a locking bar and a pointed-arch surround at the front.
