Description

72, 74, 76, and 78 High Street is a house that has been divided into offices. The building features a 13th-century undercroft beneath a house built in 1803, which has been altered in the 20th century. The undercroft is made of chalk and stone, supported by brick props, while the upper part is constructed from orange/red brick with some tile hanging on the right-hand return front. The building has a stone-coped parapet that obscures a plain-tiled roof. It stands three storeys above the undercroft and has three bays with stacks on the left. The front is regular, but the central bay is now blocked. The outer bays on the second and first floors have tripartite sash windows under gauged brick heads, with only the windows on the right retaining their glazing bars. The ground floor is stone-dressed, featuring two office windows at the ends, both of which are mullioned and transomed with triple round-arched upper lights. There are paired doors to the left and right of the center, each under fanlights and with deep bracketed hoods above. In front of No. 72, there are stone steps with cast iron railings featuring an anthemion pattern.

The undercroft measures approximately 10 meters by 6 meters and is 3 meters high. It consists of three bays deep with a groined ribbed roof that rises from two round piers. The arch corbels are carved with grotesques and human heads. Remnants of stairs from the former street level can still be seen, suggesting that the undercroft was likely used as a shop. The undercroft is a scheduled Ancient Monument, designated as Surrey Monument No. 166.
