Description
No. 70 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It has a core that dates back to the 17th century, with a front extension added in the late 19th century and further restorations and alterations made in the 20th century. The building features a timber-framed core, which is clad in colourwashed rough-cast on the right-hand return front, while the front displays 19th-century tile hanging with bands of fishscale pattern tiles and a plain-tiled roof.
The structure is two storeys high with attics and has a gable-end facing the street. It is adorned with deep, dentilled bargeboards, spherical finials at the ends, and a pendant spike finial at the apex of the gable. There are stacks located at the rear. The attic features a two-light leaded casement window beneath a cornice hood supported by four small scrolled brackets, and there is a four-light leaded window on the first floor flanked by single-light leaded windows, all under a common cornice hood. The shop front, which is a 20th-century addition, consists of plate glass and brick tiles.
On the right-hand return front, which faces Chapel Street, the first floor jetties out on the left half, with two windows above a blind ground floor. The right half has a fixed plate glass window, with two small windows located under the eaves above. Inside, some ceiling frames are visible in the upper rooms of the rear range. The building is included in the listing for its group value.
