Description

Nos. 77, 79, and 81 High Street is a former inn and post office, now serving as a shop. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century and features an early 20th-century shop front below, with 19th-century extensions to the rear right. The building is timber framed and clad in colourwashed render above a wooden shop front, with a red/brown brick extension to the right. It has plain tiled roofs and double gable-end ranges facing the High Street, with extensions at right angles forming an L-plan on the corner site. The structure is three storeys high with main stacks located at the rear of the gables. Each gable has one 2-light casement window on the second floor, and there is a round bow window between the gables flanked by further casement windows. On the first floor, there are two hip-roofed square oriel windows, each featuring three front lights and two side lights. The shop fronts below are made of plate glass with wooden fascias and a door to the right. The right-hand return front has an irregular arrangement of sash windows under gauged brick heads, with six windows on the first and second floors and a shop front across the ground floor. Inside, there is a 16th or 17th-century brick fireplace in the first-floor room, and original panelling may still exist beneath later cladding.
