Description
No. 56 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the mid-18th century and features large 20th-century extensions at the rear. The building is constructed of red brick, with a stone and glass shop front topped by a stone-coped parapet that obscures a plain tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with attics and has stacks located at the rear. The front has three bays, with three 20th-century centre-pivot windows set in raised lugged surrounds at the attic level. The first floor has outer twelve-pane glazing-bar sash windows, and there is a round-arched window in the centre, framed by a block-rusticated raised brick surround with a sill band that extends across the front. The shop front below is made of plate glass and features central doors. Originally, the building was four storeys high, but the top storey has been removed and replaced with the parapet. The 20th-century extensions at the rear are not of special interest.
