Description

No. 46 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 16th century and was reconstructed in the early 20th century. The building has a timber frame, covered in whitewashed render, and features a plain tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with attics, and has a triple-gabled design that faces Quarry Street on the right side. There are diagonally placed stacks at the rear right.

The gable end facing High Street has a bargeboard and includes two 2-light leaded attic casements beneath drip moulds. On the first floor, there is a large square oriel window under a hipped plain-tiled roof, with continuous mullioned and transomed leaded glazing across the front and sides. The ground floor has fixed glazing-bar windows, with a curved corner to the left of the door set in a recess.

On the right-hand return front, the first floor is jettied, supported by a braced dragon beam on the left and three pairs of braces in the centre and right. The bressumer board features floral and foliage carved decoration. Above, there are triple gables with lead gutters supported on scroll brackets and decorative hoppers. Each gable has one leaded casement in the attic and one flush, mullioned and transomed leaded casement window below on the first floor. The ground floor has three large fixed windows, with doors located to the right of centre and in a lower range to the right. Inside, some of the frame is exposed on the upper floors. Photographs of the building are held in the National Monuments Record.
