Description

UFFINGTON LOWER COMMON SU3089 11/145 Common Farmhouse.

Farmhouse. Late C18 to left and 2 mid C19 bays to right. Squared and coursed chalk, chalk quoins; stone slate roof to front, otherwise Welsh slate; brick stacks. 3-unit plan. 2-storey, 5-window range. Flat hood with carved brackets and -lights over 4-panelled door in centre of late C18 elevation; 3-bay late C18 front has timber lintels over 8-pane sashes. Mid C19 front has 3-light late C19 casements to first floor, mid C19 canted brick bay and C20 casement to ground floor; also row of 4 diamond and 5 rectangular shapes cut in chalk and with flint infill. Gabled roof; brick end and ridge stacks. Interior: quarry tile floor; fireplaces with bressumers in late C18 part; 4- panelled and plank doors. Service wing to rear is mid C19 with double hipped slate roof; lateral brick stack; two 2-light leaded casements, brick segmental arch over plank door. The late C18 part is probably c.1790, when the Common was enclosed.
