Description

Lizzie’s Cottage and The Vale Cottage are two houses situated on the west side of High Street, Uffington. The right-hand part, Lizzie's Cottage, dates back to the 17th century. The left-hand part, The Vale Cottage, was likely built around 1747, as evidenced by a datestone found in the garden.

The construction materials differ; Lizzie's Cottage is built of chalk rubble brought to course, while The Vale Cottage is of chalk ashlar. Both have thatched roofs and brick stacks. The houses have a two-unit plan, with a four-window range over two storeys. An early 19th-century four-panelled door is positioned off-centre to Lizzie's Cottage, and a mid-19th-century four-panelled door with a decorative iron porch sits centrally in The Vale Cottage. The ground floor windows are 20th-century casements with label moulds, while the first floor of Lizzie's Cottage has 18th-century three-light leaded casements. The Vale Cottage's mid-19th-century three-light casements are centered and wedged, with chalk lintels featuring raised keys. Gabled roofs top both buildings, with end stacks and a central ridge stack. A brick and tile gabled extension, likely dating to around 1850, extends from the rear of The Vale Cottage.

The interior of The Vale Cottage features an 18th-century fireplace with a wooden bressumer to the left, and a circa 1850 marble fireplace with acanthus leaf brackets supporting the mantel shelf to the right. Before around 1850, The Vale Cottage was comprised of two separate dwellings, a fact evidenced by a blocked door to the left of the current entrance. The interior of Lizzie’s Cottage has not been inspected.

The buildings are listed for their architectural interest as a good example of 17th-century vernacular architecture.
