Description
The Laurels is a house dating from the early to mid-18th century, located on Broad Street, Uffington. The house is constructed of chalk ashlar, divided by a single brick course and set on a sarsen base; it has chalk quoins, brick quoining at the base, and a Welsh slate roof. Brick stacks are present. The original design comprised two units, with Edwardian rear and side wings added later. The two-storey facade has a three-window arrangement. An Edwardian six-panelled door (two glazed) is set beneath a timber lintel, framed by a moulded architrave and sheltered by a gabled Edwardian porch. A flat arch of chalk voussoirs with projecting keys sits above modern casement windows. The roof is gabled and features end stacks. The interior includes Edwardian four-panelled doors, a straight-flight staircase with turned balusters in the rear wing, and a marble fireplace, decorated with swags, in the front left room. A roughcast one-bay, two-storey addition exists to the left, and brick and slate rebuilding of the original rear lean-to occurred around 1910.
