Description
Fence Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century, with extensions added in the early 19th century and some later alterations. It is constructed of coursed, dressed sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has a layout of one bay on the left and three bays on the right, with the left bay being of later construction, identifiable by a straight joint and shallower plan.
The farmhouse has a wallstone plinth and a two-storey round-arched panel in each bay. On the ground floor, the third bay has external stone steps leading to a 19th-century doorway that features a panelled door and a fanlight within an architrave, complete with a carved keystone. The fourth bay contains a 16-pane sash window beneath a lintel that is tooled as voussoirs. The first two bays have 20th-century insertions, including a French window and a large bowed casement.
There is a first-floor band at the impost of the arches beneath the 20th-century casements in the first two bays, while the third and fourth bays retain old horizontal-sliding sashes with glazing bars. The eaves of the hipped roof are supported by shaped stone gutter brackets. The building has ashlar end stacks and a ridge stack located on the left of the second bay. Attached outbuildings on the right return are not of special interest.
