Description

Falconer Farmhouse is a farmhouse and cottage that was derelict at the time of resurvey. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys, cellars, and an attic, featuring five bays with short wings at the rear on both the left and right sides. The central door is set in a chamfered, quoined ashlar surround. The windows are casements with glazing bars and inset opening lights, placed beneath segmental brick arches that include blue and red headers; the window in bay one is blind, and the window in bay two has been altered. There is a plat band beneath similar first-floor windows, with the window in bay four also being blind. The right side has shaped kneelers and gable copings, along with renewed brick end stacks. At the rear, hipped-roof wings are linked by later ground-floor infill, and a lateral stack with a later shaft rises from the main range. Inside, there are substantial remains of a dog-leg staircase with oak newels and splat balusters. Bay five of the house serves as a separate cottage with a compact winding stair in the front-right corner, and the rear room includes a bread oven. This unusual combination of farmhouse and cottage is an interesting example of 18th-century brickwork, which is rare in vernacular houses of the area.
