Description

ASTON-CUM-AUGHTON FALCONER LANE SK48NW (east end) 5/8 Falconer Farmhouse 18.8.86 II Farmhouse and cottage, derelict at time of resurvey. Early-mid C18. Red brick in Flemish bond, Welsh slate roof. 2 storeys with cellars and attic, 5 bays with short wings to rear left and rear right. Central door in chamfered, quoined ashlar surround. Casements with glazing bars and inset opening light beneath segmental brick arches with blue and red headers; bay-1 window blind, bay-2 window altered. Plat band beneath similar 1st-floor windows, bay-4 window blind. Shaped kneelers and gable copings on right; renewed brick end stacks. Rear: hipped-roof wings linked by later ground- floor infill, lateral stack with later shaft rises from main range. Interior: substantial remains ot a dog-leg staircase with oak newels and splat balusters, Bay 5 of house forms separate cottage with compact winding stair in front-right corner; rear room has bread oven. Unusual farmhouse/cottage combination; interesting example of C18 brickwork rare in vernacular houses of the area.
