Description
Challow House Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, built around 1790. It features flared Flemish bond and header bond brickwork with red brick quoins and dressings, topped by a Welsh slate roof and brick stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with a three-window range. A broken pediment adorns the entrance, which has an unusual Doric pilaster framing a six-panelled door with a fanlight above. The windows are topped with gauged brick flat arches over sash windows. A red brick flush storey band and dog-tooth eaves add to the detailing. The hipped roof has end stacks. The right side wall has a similar two-window range with a round-headed mid-19th century sash window inserted into the lower rear window. The rear wall features segmental header arches over two three-light leaded casements and one two-light leaded cross window for the stair-light. Inside, there is a straight-flight staircase, and the first floor includes late 18th century fireplaces with mid-19th century grates. The attic has a slatted partition and a door with a lock leading to the original granary.
