Description

The Shambles and Inglenook Cottage is a farmhouse that was converted into two cottages in the late 18th century. It features elements from the 17th and late 18th centuries, along with an early 19th-century one-bay extension on the left side. The original structure was timber-framed, with square framing visible on the right gable wall. The building is constructed with squared chalk brought to course on a sarsen base, and it has brick quoins and dressings. The roof is thatched, and there are brick stacks.

The building has a lobby-entry plan, although the original layout is not entirely clear. It is 1.5 stories high and has a five-window range. There are cambered brick arches above the planked door and 20th-century casements. The roof is half-hipped, featuring a 17th-century ridge, a late 19th-century end on the right, and late 20th-century front lateral stacks.

Inside, The Shambles has chamfered beams, while the Adjoining Cottage includes a bressumer over the fireplace, original stairs opposite the entry, and a chamfered beam. There is a timber-framed wall separating The Shambles from the adjoining cottage. A 20th-century brick and tile lean-to is attached to the right gable wall, which incorporates the current entry to The Shambles. Mortice holes in the exposed timber frame of the right gable wall suggest that the original house extended further to the right and has since been truncated.
