Description

Leys Cottage is a house, now divided into two dwellings, dating from the 16th or early 17th century. It features timber framing with colourwashed brick and plastered infill, along with some limestone rubble and brick. The roof is thatched with brick ridge stacks. The building has a two-unit plan with an end outshut and consists of two storeys plus attics, along with a one-storey section plus attics.

The front has four windows, with the three bays to the right being higher. The central and right bays are fully framed and include the entrance, which is below a single-light leaded casement, with two-light casements to the right. The bay to the left of the entrance has first-floor framing and three-light casements. The lower bay on the extreme left features heavy framing with diagonal braces and may be the earliest section; it includes an old plank door, a three-light leaded casement, and a small three-light leaded dormer. The outshut against the left gable is also framed and has a two-light casement. The roof is half-hipped. The right gable wall is made of rubble, while the rear has been largely rebuilt but retains 18th-century leaded casements.

Inside, the central unit has stop-chamfered beams and joists, along with a large open fireplace that features an arched and chamfered bressumer. There is also a quarter-turn stair in the right unit.
