Description
Cider Mill Cottages and Old Thatch is a house that has been divided into three dwellings. It dates from the 16th century or earlier and was partly remodeled in the early 17th century, with later alterations made in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. The building is constructed of limestone rubble, partly coursed, with some timber-framing that has painted brick infill and replacement walling. It features a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the southern end and has two brick ridge stacks.
The structure consists of four bays aligned north to south, with a large central rubble chimney located to the south of what was once a through-passage. It is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers. The west front elevation displays irregular fenestration, primarily featuring 20th-century casements. The ground floor has a variety of windows, including a 2-light, a 3-light, a 4-light, and two single-light windows. One of the single-light windows has a late 19th-century cambered brick head and is set into a blocked doorway that faced the former through-passage. Additionally, there is a 17th-century chamfered mullioned window with five lights and the remains of a hoodmould on the ground floor. Above, there are two eyebrow dormers with 2-light windows, and attic lights are present in the gable ends.
Entrances to all three dwellings are located in the rear west elevation and feature 20th-century glazed lean-to porches and doors. The interior of the two northernmost bays has been inspected and reveals two pairs of intermediate upper crucks. The former hall contains an inserted 17th-century ceiling with stop-chamfered main beams and joists. The large central chimney has back-to-back fireplaces, with the fireplace in the hall also being chamfered and featuring broach stops.
