Description

Lower Farm Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-20th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill on a limestone rubble base, featuring brick replacement walling and a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the west end. The cottage consists of two framed bays aligned east to west, with a large external chimney at the east end that has a rebuilt brick stack. It is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers.

The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with some short straight upper corner braces. The framing has been replaced at the west end and on the north side. At the east gable end, a collar and tie-beam truss with one raking strut is partly visible. On the south front elevation, all windows are 20th-century 2-light casements, with two ground floor windows and an eyebrow dormer in the eastern bay, as well as an attic light at the west end.

The main entrance is located in a 20th-century single-storey wing that adjoins the east gable end, enclosing the chimney and featuring a glazed door and a garage door facing south. There is also a lean-to 20th-century outshut made of boarded timber at the west end, which includes a window in its south end and a glazed door on its west side. The interior is said to retain its large fireplace. Despite the alterations, the original plan of the building remains intact, and it forms a pair with Cherry Orchard Cottage, which adds to its group value.
