Description

BECKFORDCP GRAFTON SO 9635 - 9735 11/39 Lower Farm Cottage GV II

House. C17 with mid-C20 alterations and additions. Timber-framed with painted brick infill on limestone rubble base, brick replacement walling and thatched roof, half-hipped at west end. Two framed bays aligned east/west with large external chimney at east end which has a rebuilt brick stack. Single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: three panels from sill to wall-plate with some short straight upper corner braces. Framing replaced at west end and north side. At east gable end a collar and tie-beam truss and one raking strut is partly visible. South front elevation: windows are all 2-light C20 casements. There are two ground floor windows and an eyebrow dormer in the eastern bay. Attic light at west end. Main entrance in C20 single-storey wing adjoining east gable end and enclosing chimney with a glazed door and garage door facing south. Also lean-to C20 outshut of boarded timber at west end with a window in its south end and a glazed door in its west side. Interior is said to retain its large fireplace. Despite the alterations to this building its original plan has remained intact and it forms a pair with Cherry Orchard Cottage (qv). Included for group value.
