Description

Lower Farm Cottages is a house that has been divided into four dwellings. It likely dates from the late 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-20th century. The building features a combination of limestone rubble and timber framing with brick infill, along with some weatherboarding on a rubble base. It has a thatched roof with two brick ridge stacks.

The structure consists of four framed bays aligned north to south, with a large chimney located between the first and second bays from the north end. It is two storeys high with an attic. The two northern bays have three rows of panels from the sill to the wall-plate, while the two southern bays have one row of panels at eaves level on the east elevation. No roof trusses are visible from the outside.

The main east elevation displays irregular fenestration, with windows primarily being 20th-century casements. There are three 3-light windows and two 2-light windows on the ground floor, one of which has a plank weathering, and two 3-light windows and three 2-light windows on the first floor. Each of the central bays has a partly-glazed 20th-century door. The entrance to the northern bay is sheltered by a lean-to 20th-century porch, which features a 2-light window on its east side and a half-glazed door on its south side. An attic light is present at the south gable end. The entrance to the southern bay is located on the south side of a rear single-bay wing made of rubble and thatch, which has a large end stack.

Significant 20th-century additions include substantial two-storey extensions to the west elevation of the central bays, a single-storey and attic addition next to the north gable end, and a lean-to outshut at the west end of the rear south wing. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted that cross-frames have survived, along with a large fireplace in the second bay from the north end. The roof structure is likely of interest as well.
