Description

ASHTON UNDER HILL CP BECKFORD ROAD (west side) So 9837 - 9937 11/7 Barn about one yard south- east of Old Manor Farmhouse GV II

Barn. Mid-C17 with mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Part timber-framed with rendered infill on limestone rubble base, part limestone rubble; plain tiled roof, half-hipped at west end. Four framed bays aligned east/west with wagon bay in bays one and three from west end. There are cart entries on the south side only. Two additional rubble bays adjoin west end and continue main roof ridge. Framing: three panels from sill to wall-plate, short straight braces in some upper corners, collar and tie-beam truss at both gable ends (west end one enclosed by rubble addition) with four struts to lower collar with rails in between and single central strut to upper collar. Two-light window in south elevation and two rectangular windows and owl hole at east end. A C19 lean-to addition with a catslide roof adjoins the west elevation of the rubble part. Interior: roof of framed part has three intermediate collar and tie-beam trusses with two struts. Rubble part has a similar intermediate collar but with three struts to collar and V-strut in the apex.
