Description
ASHTON UNDER HILL CP BECKFORD ROAD (east side) SO 9837 - 9937 11/10 22/4 Middle Farmhouse 30-7-59 GV II
Farmhouse, now house. C17, altered and extended c1800 and mid-C19. Limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and plain tiled roof. L-plan; original C17 part aligned east/west with large external chimney and bread oven on north side. This part was refronted by large two-bay west range which has external chimneys with offsets and moulded cappings, one at its north gable end and the other to the right its west front elevation. Two storeys, attic and cellar. West front elevation: windows and entrance have hoodmoulds with returns and the windows are all C20 casements. There are two 3-light ground floor windows and three 2-light first floor windows. The central entrance has a 4-centred head, relief carvings in the spandrels and a C20 door. Attic lights in gable ends. The south gable end retains its ovolo-moulded mullioned windows. A mid-C19 single-storey kitchen wing adjoins the original range to the south-east. Interior: original part retains its timber-framed west wall and there is a large fireplace in this part and at the north end of the front west range.
