Description

The Close is a house located on Elmley Road in Ashton Under Hill, dating from around 1600, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building features a timber frame with painted brick and rendered infill set on a limestone rubble base, along with some replacement brick walling and refacing. The roof is plain tiled, with a ridge stack positioned to the south of the center and at the south end.

The structure consists of five framed bays that run north to south, and it has a large brick chimney with offsets located at the rear of the central bay. To the north of this bay is a rear wing that spans two bays. The house is two stories tall with an attic that includes dormers. The framing includes four panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with some panels featuring subsidiary studding. At the north end, there is a collar and tie-beam truss supported by three struts to the lower collar. The rear wing showcases a row of rectangular panels at the first floor level, with swept lower corner braces and a collar and tie-beam truss with two struts at its west end.

On the east front elevation, the ground floor has two three-light windows with transoms and two cross-casements, while the first floor mirrors this arrangement, adding an additional cross-casement above the entrance. There are also two 19th-century gabled dormers with two-light casements. The main entrance, located in the central bay, features a gabled tiled porch supported by shaped brackets and a half-glazed door. At the rear, there are single-storey additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The interior has not been inspected.
