Description

Old Beams is a house dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. It features a timber frame with rendered infill set on a limestone rubble base, a limestone rubble wall at the south end, and a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the north end. The house consists of three framed bays arranged in a north-south direction, with a large central bay that includes a substantial external rubble chimney and a bread oven located at the rear of the east elevation.

The building is a single storey with an attic that has dormers. The framing consists of two panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and it has a truncated collar and tie-beam truss with struts at the north end. On the west front elevation, all the windows are 20th-century casements, including a three-light window and two single-light windows on the ground floor, along with a central eyebrow dormer featuring a two-light window. The main entrance, located to the left of the central bay, has a thatched porch supported by timber posts and a 20th-century door. There are attic lights in the gable ends, and at the rear, there is a single-storey kitchen wing from the 19th century. Inside, the house has a large central fireplace and a winder staircase in the south bay.
