Description

Yew Tree House is a house that dates from the 17th century or possibly earlier, with alterations made in the mid-18th century and late 20th century. It is timber-framed with rendered infill set on a rubble base, topped with a slate roof and a rubble stack at the west end, which has been rebuilt in brick. The house consists of two framed bays aligned east to west and originally had a single storey with an attic; the roof was raised in the 18th century to create two full storeys.

The framing features three panels from the sill to the wall plate, with an additional row of panels at the eaves level where the roof has been raised. At the east end, there is a collar and tie-beam truss with struts and a V-strut above the collar. The west end has a king-post truss with raking struts across the lower angles. The windows are all 20th-century casements.

On the north front elevation, there is a two-light window and a single-light window on the ground floor, along with three two-light windows and a single-light window on the first floor. The entrance in the west bay features a 20th-century gabled porch with a multi-paned window at its north end and the doorway on its west side. There are also 20th-century lean-to outshuts at both ends of the building.

Inside, the house has stop-chamfered main ceiling beams and a large stone fireplace with chamfered jambs and a bread oven. The lack of weathering on the timber at the west end suggests that additional bay(s) may have been demolished during the 18th-century alterations, implying that it may have once been a longhouse.
