Description

Barberry Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. It is timber-framed with rendered infill set on a rubble base, and features some rubble walling that is partly rendered, topped with a slate roof. A tall brick chimney from the 19th century is located on the west side of the building. The cottage likely consists of two framed bays aligned north to south, with a large external chimney on the west side of the northern bay. There is also a continuous timber-framed lean-to with a catslide roof attached to the remaining part of the west elevation. The building is single storey with an attic.

The framing is visible at the north end, which was originally jettied but has since been underbuilt in rubble. There are two square panels at first floor level, featuring short straight braces in the upper corners. The structure includes an interrupted collar and tie-beam truss with a V-strut in the apex. The southern bay, likely the original parlour, is said to have close-set studding on the eastern side. The west lean-to displays two rows of panels from the sill to the wall-plate.

On the east front elevation, the ground floor features a three-light casement window from the 20th century and a lean-to porch supported by timber posts, which has boarded infill and a 20th-century door. There are attic lights in the gable ends. To the north-west, there is a single-storey, single-bay service wing from the 19th century, which includes a two-light casement window in its east elevation. Inside, the cottage has stop-chamfered main ceiling beams, and the wall-post and moulded bracket of the former jetty are visible in the north-west corner. A large fireplace is present but now partly blocked.
