Description

This is a barn located about 50 yards south-west of Rectory Farmhouse, dating from around 1600 and extended in the mid-17th century. It is timber-framed with brick infill set on a plinth of lias limestone rubble and has a plain tiled roof. The barn consists of three plus three framed bays arranged east to west, each featuring central wagon bays with opposing cart entries and double doors; the older section is situated to the east.

In terms of framing, the older part has four panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in the lower corners of the two outer panels beneath the tie-beam at the east gable end. The gable end trusses include collar and tie-beam structures with two collars, five struts supporting the lower collar, three struts for the upper collar, and a V-strut at the apex. The upper two rows of infill panels and the east gable end panels display header ventilation patterns.

The later addition features three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners of the west gable end. It has a collar and tie-beam truss with three long vertical struts to the upper collar, small raking struts in the lower corners, and a V-strut in the apex. Inside, there are two tiers of trenched purlins throughout. The older section includes two intermediate collar and tie-beam trusses with raking struts in the lower corners and upper collar, while the intermediate trusses in the addition have long vertical struts to the upper collar, with angle struts to the lower tier of purlins. Additionally, there is a 20th-century outshut with a catslide roof that adjoins the two central bays on the north side.
