Description

The Malt House is a house that likely dates back to the 16th century, with alterations and extensions made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It features part timber framing with brick infill, brick refacing, and replacement walling, along with brick additions and plain tiled roofs. The building has two brick ridge end stacks from the 19th-century addition. Originally, it had a hall and cross-wing plan, with the hall oriented on a west/east axis and a cross-wing of two framed bays at the east gable end. The main part was completely rebuilt during the 19th century and has a parallel rear range from the 20th century. The house is two storeys high.

The surviving framing includes two rows of square panelling below the wall-plate level, with swept braces in the lower corners, and collar and tie-beam trusses featuring two collars, four struts to the lower collar, and two struts to the upper collar. On the south front elevation, the cross-wing gable end on the right side has the main entrance, which features a half-glazed 20th-century door and a left side-light with a cambered head, along with two attic lights in the gable. To the left of the wing, there is a 19th-century two-window range; the ground floor windows have cambered heads and all windows are 3-light casements. The central entrance is now blocked but retains a 6-panelled door and a gabled canopy. Inside, the roof of the wing has an intermediate tie-beam truss with raking struts, although a section of the tie-beam has been removed.
