Description
Thatch Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick and rendered infill, along with brick refacing and replacement walling, topped by a thatched roof. The building consists of two framed bays aligned north to south, with a large external chimney and a detached stack at the south gable end. It is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers.
The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and a collar and tie-beam truss with a V-strut above the collar, which is partly visible at the south gable end. On the west front elevation, the ground floor has a window in each bay, and a dormer window is cut into the thatch on the left side. All windows are 2-light casements, and there is a central 20th-century door. The chimney at the south gable end has been extended to be flush with the front elevation, beneath a lean-to tiled roof, and features a rectangular light facing west.
Inside, there is an intermediate collar and tie-beam truss with struts, and a single tier of trenched purlins. The winder staircase in the north bay was rebuilt around 1940. A 20th-century lean-to extension is attached to the rear of the cottage.
