Description

The Cottage is a house that has been divided into two dwellings, dating from the 17th century with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick and rendered infill, topped with a thatched roof and a brick ridge stack. The building consists of four framed bays oriented east to west, with an inserted chimney in the second bay from the west end to create a lobby entrance plan. It is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers.

The framing mainly consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with some long straight braces in the lower corners, and collar and tie-beam trusses supported by two struts and a V-strut above the collar. On the north front elevation, all the windows are 2-light casements; the ground floor has three windows, and there are two eyebrow dormers cut into the thatch, along with two ledged and battened doors. The west gable end facing the road features a ground floor window and an attic light with plank weathering.

Inside, the roof includes collar and tie-beam intermediate trusses with struts and a single tier of trenched purlins. The building retains winder staircases, one of which is positioned beside a back-to-back fireplace. The timber-framing is considered to be among the most complete surviving examples in the village.
