Description

Old Pear Tree Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed with painted brick infill, brick replacement walling, and plain tiled roofs. It consists of four framed bays aligned north to south, with a probable through-passage bay located second from the north end. There is a large rebuilt external chimney at the rear of the third bay from the north end, as well as an external brick chimney on the north side elevation. The cottage is single storey with an attic that features dormers.

The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, long straight braces in the lower corners, and a collar and tie-beam truss with struts below the collar and a V-strut above in the south gable end. The rear wall-frame has been rebuilt in brick. The west front elevation displays irregular fenestration with seven ground floor windows, all featuring plank weatherings and 2-light casements. The three windows in the north end bay are set beneath a continuous plank weathering. There are three full dormers; the left one is from the 17th century, while the central and right ones are from the 19th century. The outer dormers have paired 2-light casements, and the central one has paired 3-light casements. The entrance, located in the through-passage position, features a 20th-century door with a lean-to canopy supported by brackets.

Inside, the roof has intermediate collar and tie-beam trusses with struts and a single tier of trenched purlins.
