Description

Poplar Tree Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and restoration in the mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with rendered infill set on a brick plinth and has a plain tiled roof. The house consists of two framed bays aligned east to west, with end chimneys, including a stack at the west end of the ridge and a rear ridge at the east end. There is a 20th-century framed bay addition at the east gable end that continues the roofline.

The cottage is two storeys high, with the framing showing three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and short straight braces across the upper corners. The west gable end has a collar and tie-beam truss with three struts and a V-strut in the apex. The north front elevation retains two 2-light 19th-century metal casement windows on both floors, with the ground floor windows featuring plank weatherings. A central 20th-century lean-to porch with a catslide roof has a 2-light casement window on the front and both side elevations, along with a 20th-century door that has a 4-centred head on the left side. The 20th-century addition includes a pair of 2-light casements on the ground floor and a gabled dormer with a 2-light casement. Inside, the cottage is noted for retaining its large fireplace at the west end.
