Description

The Brook House is an early 19th century house, with alterations made in the mid-20th century. It is built of stuccoed brick with slate roofs and large rear stacks. The main part of the house has two storeys and three bays; the outer bays feature 16-pane sashes, while the central bay has a 12-pane sash on both floors. A large 16-pane sash is found at the right gable end. The main entrance is located in a wing projecting to the rear right, set at a 45-degree angle to the main house and of lower height. This wing has two storeys and two bays, with 12-pane sashes in each window. The central entrance features a cast iron porch, from which the swept canopy was missing at the time of survey in June 1985, and a 6-panelled door. A further section extends to the north at the right end, continuing the lower roofline and returning from the 45-degree angle. This section has 20th century casements with cambered heads (one on the ground floor and two on the first floor), a 20th century bow window, and a slate-roofed verandah. The interior was not inspected. The house was originally constructed as part of a needle mill.
