Description

The Old Black Boy is a house that was formerly used as a public house. It dates from the 17th century and has undergone alterations in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, a brick plinth, and plain tiled roofs. It features four framed bays aligned east to west, with a central chimney and a brick ridge stack that forms a lobby entrance. There is also an external 19th-century chimney at the west gable end. The structure is single storey with an attic that includes dormers.

The framing mainly consists of four panels from the sill to the wall-plate, although the west end bay has only three panels. There are short straight braces in the upper corners at the west gable end, and a collar and tie-beam truss at the west end with three struts to the collar and a V-strut in the apex.

On the south front elevation, the ground floor has a 2-light 19th-century casement and three 3-light 20th-century leaded casements, all featuring plank weatherings. There are four hipped dormers with 2-light 20th-century leaded casements. The central entrance has a flat moulded canopy on console brackets, a moulded architrave, and a 20th-century stable door. The interior has not been inspected, and there are 19th-century and 20th-century additions at the rear.
