Description
Perry Mill is a late 16th-century farmhouse, altered extensively in the 18th and 20th centuries and now used as a house. The building is timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, brick replacement walling, and additions. It has plain tiled roofs. Originally three bays aligned north/south, it features a large brick ridge stack on the central and north bay, a large external chimney with offsets, and a rebuilt detached stack at the south gable. A timber-framed lean-to addition with a catslide roof extends to the rear of the central and north bays. The house is single-storey with an attic, incorporating dormers. The timber framing displays three panels from sill to wall-plate, with two rows of rectangular panels to the rear lean-to. Large swept braces are visible in the lower corners of the north gable end. The roof structure consists of collar and tie-beam trusses with three struts to the collar and a V-strut in the apex. The west front has two 3-light casement windows, a 2-light casement, two square stair lights, and a gabled dormer with a 3-light casement. Dormer windows are also present in the gable ends. The north gable end has plank weatherings at tie-beam and collar level. Internally, much of the original timber framing remains, including large swept braces at the lower corners of the cross frames. The central bay contains moulded ceiling beams resting on large consoles, and a large fireplace. A rear wing, dating back to the 18th century, extends to the south, with a 20th-century glazed lean-to addition on its south side, which encloses the main entrance. This entrance is accessed via a ledged and battened door with a cambered head. A further lean-to is located at the front of the chimney at the south gable end of the original section.
