Description
1 and 2 Gable Cottages are a house, originally subdivided into three dwellings. The core of the building dates to the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed with painted brick infill and replacement brick walling, and a plain tiled roof, which was retiled in the mid-20th century at the north end. It has three framed bays aligned north/south. A brick chimney is located between the central and north bays, with a stack on the ridge, and there is an external brick chimney with offsets at the south gable end. The house has a single storey and attic, with dormers.
The timber framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners. The north gable end shows a collar and tie-beam truss with struts. The east front elevation has three three-light casement windows on the ground floor, and a large gabled dormer with a paired two-light casement in the north bay. Beneath the dormer is a gabled, 20th-century timber-framed porch with a half-glazed door, and a smaller, similar porch is at the north end.
The interior was not inspected.
A two-storey, 20th-century wing adjoins the central bay at the rear, and there is a single-storey, hipped roofed extension to the rear and side of the south bay. The land in front of the building was historically used as a glover’s yard, and in the 19th century a small community of glovers lived in the village.
