Description

Crowle Cottage is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick infill, brick replacement walling, and a concrete tiled roof. The house has three framed bays aligned north to south and includes large external chimneys with offsets and detached stacks at the gable ends. It is a single storey with an attic that has dormers.

The cruck framing is notable, with wall-frames consisting of two and three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and full cruck trusses exposed at the gable ends. The east front elevation shows irregular fenestration; the ground floor has four 2-light casements, with the far left window featuring a cambered head. To the right, there is a gabled bay window with a 2-light casement and small double doors beneath it. Above this are three gabled dormers, each with a 2-light casement. To the left of center, there is a porch with a lean-to catslide roof, which has a 3-light casement in its front elevation and a 20th-century door on the left side. The gable ends have attic lights, and the north end chimney features a rectangular light at the base of its east side.

Inside, two full intermediate cruck trusses are retained, and there is a 20th-century extension at the rear. Crowle Cottage is one of only three cruck-framed houses still standing in the village.
