Description
Cross Cottage is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and restoration and extension in the mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with rendered infill and a thatched roof. A large external sandstone chimney is located at the east gable end, which has a detached, star-shaped brick stack and a bread oven. The building was originally a cruck hall house, of which one bay remains, along with an additional framed bay from the 17th century at the east end. The house is single storey with an attic that includes dormers.
The framing includes a full cruck visible in the west gable end, with two to three irregularly sized panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, and short straight braces in the east gable end with a tie-beam truss above. The south elevation features three 2-light casements on the ground floor and two eyebrow dormers with 2-light casements above. The west gable end has a 2-light casement and an attic light. A 20th-century thatched two-storey extension is attached to the north elevation of the cruck-framed bay, with the west side serving as the current entrance. Inside, the other pair of cruck blades is intact, and there is a winder staircase located at the rear of the south blade.
