Description
Gadd's is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, which has been altered and extended in the mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with rendered infill on a sandstone rubble base, topped by a plain tiled roof. At the rear, there is a large external sandstone chimney with a brick stack that has a cogged course at its base. The building consists of three framed bays and is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers.
The framing includes three square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in the upper corners. The truss at the left gable end has a collar-and-tie-beam design with queen struts and a V-strut in the apex. On the front elevation, the ground floor features a 2-light casement window with plank weathering, a rectangular stair light, and a row of five 2-light casements with continuous planked weathering. There are also three gabled dormers, each with 2-light casements, and attic lights in the left gable end.
The main entrance is now located in a single-bay extension at the right gable end, which continues the main roof line and is completely glazed on the front elevation. This extension links the original structure with a 20th-century cross-wing designed in a matching style.
