Description
The stables, now used as a store, are located immediately north-east of the Cross House and date from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and partial rebuilding in the mid-20th century. The structure is timber-framed, with some timbers renewed, featuring painted brick and rendered infill, a sandstone and brick plinth, and brick replacement walling, all topped by a plain tiled roof. The building consists of two framed bays and is two storeys high.
The framing includes four square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with large swept braces in the lower corners. The tie-beam truss has two collars, queen struts, and a V-strut in the apex at the west gable end. On the south elevation, the ground floor has three 2-light casements, while the first floor has one 2-light casement and a ledged and battened door in the left bay. There are also attic lights in the gable ends.
Inside, there is an intermediate tie-beam truss with two collars, queen struts, and V-struts in the apex, along with a double row of trenched purlins. The floor is paved with blue bricks, and there is a 20th-century two-storey extension and outshut on the north elevation. The stables are included for their group value.
