Description
The Old Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick and rendered infill, along with brick additions and a plain tiled roof. There are brick external stacks at both gable ends, with the west stack now encased by a 20th-century extension. The cottage consists of two framed bays and is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers.
The framing primarily consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with some short straight braces in the upper corners. The east gable end has a collar-and-tie-beam truss with queen struts and V-struts in the apex. On the front elevation, the ground floor has two 3-light casements with plank weatherings, two gabled dormers with 3-light casements, and an entrance located at the right side of the west bay. This entrance features a gabled porch supported by timber uprights and a half-glazed door.
Inside, the roof includes an intermediate collar-and-tie-beam truss and a single row of trenched purlins, while the main beams are stop-chamfered. At the west gable end, there is a large 20th-century cross-wing, which has paired 3-light casements on the ground floor and an attic light in its front gable end.
