Description
Salwarpe Bridge is a canal road bridge built in 1771 by James Brindley. It is constructed of red brick in English bond and features a part-dressed splayed sandstone rubble parapet. The bridge has a high round arch and measures about 18 yards long, with cambered abutments. Beneath the arch, there are 12 high-level scaffold bearers with hardwood padstones still in place on either side. A bridge number plate (7) is attached to the north side of the bridge. The towpath runs beneath the bridge on the east side and is bordered with large blue bullnosed bricks. The Droitwich barge canal, which this bridge spans, is a broad gauge canal that connects Droitwich with the River Severn. James Brindley served as the consultant engineer during its construction, which was completed to support the salt industry using specially developed "wich" barges.
