Description
House. Dates to the 15th century, with alterations and extensions probably in the late 17th century and mid-20th century. It is timber-framed, with painted brick and rendered infill between sandstone rubble, brick replacement walling, refacing, and additions. The roof is tiled, half-hipped to the front wing, and has a large brick central ridge stack with three square shafts and a joint cap, as well as a smaller ridge stack to the west wing. Originally a cruck hall house of four bays, with a two-bay hall, one bay of which is now occupied by a large chimney, it is oriented roughly north/south with a gable end facing the road, and single bay additions at the centre of both side elevations creating a cruciform plan. A single-storey and attic section has dormers. The timber framing is visible mainly in the right side elevation, with two and three panels from sill to wall-plate, and long straight braces in the west wing gable end. The original end cruck trusses have been replaced by collar-and-tie-beam trusses with queen struts. The front elevation facing the road has a projecting north end bay of the original part; the gable end contains two 2-light casements, one with plank weathering, one with a cambered head, an attic 2-light casement with plank weathering, and a narrow door with a lean-to canopy on shaped brackets. The left side elevation includes a 20th-century square light, a 2-light casement, and a flat-roofed dormer with a casement. The right side elevation has a 3-light 20th-century casement and a gabled dormer with a 2-light casement. A single-bay wing, brick with a 2-course band above ground floor level, is projecting from the main range to the left, and includes a 3-light ground floor casement and a half-dormer with a catslide roof and 2-light casement. Another 20th-century addition is to the left of this wing. The right side of the main range is punctuated by another single-bay wing, brick, with a 2-light casement. The rear of this wing contains the present main entrance, which is of 20th-century date. Inside, three cruck trusses remain; there are back-to-back inglenook fireplaces in the lower bay of the hall, and an inserted floor.
