Description

Churchfields Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick infill, brick replacement walling, and plain tiled roofs. The main ridge has a rebuilt brick stack, and there is an external chimney on the right side (north) elevation with tiled offsets. The building has a hall and cross-wing type plan, with the cross-wing located at the north-east gable end. The main range consists of three framed bays, with a large chimney in the north-east end bay and a lobby-entry plan, while the cross-wing has two framed bays and is two storeys high.

The framing includes three square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in the upper corners. The collar-and-tie-beam trusses have mostly been rebuilt in brick. The front elevation features one ground floor and three first floor 2-light casements, a lean-to tiled porch on brackets, and a 20th-century half-glazed door. The cross-wing gable end has two 3-light casements with cambered heads. Inside, the roof has intermediate collar-and-tie-beam trusses, a single row of trenched purlins, and straight wind-braces. There is a cambered doorhead on the first floor of the main part, as well as back-to-back inglenook fireplaces with a bread oven. At the rear, there is an outshut to the main part and a 20th-century single storey extension to the rear of the cross-wing. A Birmingham fire insurance mark is present on the tie-beam at the south-west gable end.
