Description

The Thatched Cottage is a house dating from the 15th century, with possible alterations from the late 16th or early 17th century, and further modifications and additions made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick and rendered infill on a base of sandstone rubble and brick, topped with thatched roofs. The cottage has a very large external brick chimney stack at the rear, as well as another external brick stack on the left side elevation.

The main part of the building consists of two framed bays, with a two-framed-bay cross-wing at the left gable end. It is partly single storey with an attic that includes dormers, and partly two storey. The main part is cruck-framed, featuring a full cruck truss with alterations to the upper right blade, which is visible in the right gable end. The framing includes irregular panels, mainly three or four from sill to wall-plate. The cross-wing has four square panels from sill to wall-plate, with swept braces on the left side elevation and collar-and-tie-beam trusses with queen struts.

On the front elevation, the main part has an oriel window supported by two shaped brackets and an eyebrow dormer with a two-light casement window. The cross-wing gable end features a ground and first floor three-light casement window, with attic lights at the right gable end. The main entrance is located at the rear, next to the cross-wing, and includes a lean-to porch with a 20th-century glazed door.

Inside, three cruck frames are visible along with some swept wind-braces. The main beams are stop-chamfered, and the large rear chimney has paired inglenook fireplaces that heat separate bays. At the rear of the cross-wing, there is a two-storey thatched extension.
