Description
The Old Rectory is a former vicarage built in the late 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. It features a brick structure set on a dressed sandstone plinth, topped with a hipped slate roof that has two brick stacks at the rear. The building stands three storeys high and has a moulded cornice at the eaves on the front, with dentilled cornices on the sides and rear.
The front elevation is composed of three bays, with the outer bays featuring canted two-storey bay windows that were added in the mid-19th century. The windows have gauged flat heads that are rendered to mimic stone voussoirs, with a dropped keyblock, except for the first-floor windows of the canted bays. The main two storeys have 12-pane sash windows, while the second floor has six-pane sash windows. The central entrance is highlighted by a doorcase with an open pediment and modillion detail, flanked by engaged Ionic columns. It features a moulded architrave, a part-glazed six-panelled door, and a barred, segmental fanlight.
Inside, the building retains decorative ceiling mouldings and an open well staircase with turned balusters and a moulded handrail. A single-storey wing with a canted bay window, built in the 19th century, is attached to the rear right of the main structure. Above the entrance door and the central first-floor window, there are Sun Assurance fire insurance marks.
