Description

Cresswells is a house dating from the early 15th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick and rendered infill, a sandstone rubble and brick base, and a plain tiled roof. The house has an external brick stack at the right gable end with paired star-shaped shafts, a small spiral stack at the rear left of the ridge, and a rear external chimney with two diagonal brick shafts. The layout follows a cruck hall house plan, consisting of a two-bay hall with a solar and service bay at each end, and it stands two storeys high with an attic.

The framing is cruck-framed, with a full cruck exposed in the right gable end and upper sections of the blades still visible in the left gable end. The wall-frame was altered in the 19th century and now features four square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with decorative diaper panels on the left gable end. The front elevation has a regular arrangement, with two 16-pane sash windows on both the ground and first floors, each with moulded architraves, and a central three-light casement. The entrance is located in the original through-passage position, featuring a gabled timber-framed porch with balusters and a 20th-century plank and battened door. The left gable end includes a 19th-century oriel window with leaded lights supported by a shaped bracket, along with an attic light above.

Inside, the intermediate full cruck frames are intact, and the main beams are stop-chamfered. There is a single-storey 19th-century wing attached to the rear left. Additionally, an upper panel in the front right bay displays a Norwich Union fire insurance mark.
