Description

This barn, located approximately 180 meters south of Northbrook Farmhouse, dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with some early 19th-century additions. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone and features a Stonesfield-slate roof. The barn has a 10-bay plan with an added range. The main range is divided into two sections of five bays each, with central double doors and lower opposed doors at the rear. The gables are adorned with stone parapets and projecting moulded kneelers. The centrally placed added double-span range at the rear is designed in a similar style and includes double doors on the sides. Inside, the earlier butt-purlin roofs feature trusses with ties and collars, and all rafters are tenoned and pegged into the purlins. Historically, Northbrook was the site of a mansion belonging to the Dashwood family, which was demolished in 1750.
